Inspiration Comes From Artists.

I have been interested in art since I was young and have had a love for some artists for a long time and I hope they never leave me.

Here is a list of 5 artists that have always inspired me and why?

Van Gogh
I love Van Gogh. His work was some of the first I remember seeing when I was young. "starry night" and "the sunflowers" were in a books my parents had. I really loved them. During my foundation at UCA, 2012, I went to Amsterdam with the college. The Van Gogh museum was closed at this point but my tutors took us to the Kruller Muller Museum just outside the city and I saw a huge collection of Van Gogh paintings. It was incredibly inspiring and just an amazing experience for me. There was a range from his brightly coloured landscapes to portraits of the poor and charcoal sketches. Then in 2016 my friend took me to New York with her and we went to see "starry night" at the MoMa. Again it was inspirational and beautiful to see these paintings in person.

Monet
Monet is another artist I have loved since I was young. I always loved the colours. I thought they were beautiful. I think it was some of the Water Lily paintings I saw first and found inspirational. Again I've been lucky enough to see them in both Amsterdam and New York and also the Impressionist show in London 2015.

Franz Ackerman
I was introduced to Ackerman during my GCSE's or just before. I had a love of colour and my teachers thought he would inspire me. He did, I liked the bright un-natural bubbles of colour.

Rothko
Rothko's work is beautiful. A real inspiration to my thoughts and ideas throughout university. His colour is fuelled with emotions and I really feel that. I love knowing an artists process, knowing how ideas become art and the process in the middle. Seeing this happen. I'd love to sit in a room and watch him create a piece (I feel like that for all these artists).

Mondrian
Mondrian is an interesting artist to me. I mostly loved reading about him. Stories about how he worked. Never having two canvases the same size and him painting and moving his studio around to resemble his paintings. I think that's what inspired me more.
I do love his work, especially the later pieces depicting New York from above and I feel like I understand those pieces more since being to New York. Seeing a painting in the city it was made really changes your perspective on the painting. It gives you more understanding of the painting and the artists relationship with it.

Thanks, frey frey!

A Blank Canvas - Seasons may Change...

Forever being told at university to try using an autumnal palette: reds, greens, yellows. That's not what is inspiring me. Sorry! Until Autumn 2016.

Gonna be honest I was quite lazy with this and did it very spur of the moment in the end and it didn't last as long as I would have liked.

But it was still pretty awesome!

Here's how it went:

  • Manic panic hair dye
  • Pillabox red
  • Sunshine yellow
  • Live Vibrant Colour
  • Blue
  • Punk purple
  • Superdrug wash in/wash out
  • Strawberry blonde

  • Like before I had lovely bleach blonde hair to begin, with freshly trimmed to get rid of the straw like ends.
  • As I was going for a orange base I used a strawberry blonde wash in/wash out dye to add warm tones to the hair as I had none due to the amount of bleach I use.
  • I only had a small amount of orange hair dye left so I mixed that with the red and yellow dyes  I had  (all manic panic) to create a warming autumn leaf tone.
  • I then mixed a bluey/purple. I didn't want too much purple but just an undertone running through the blue.
  • I added the blue and bit of the red to it in a pot and mixed it.

The two main colours are now ready.

In my head I wanted the orange as the main colour on top with the blue underneath like a long shadow. I wanted this appear like a autumnal sunset.

So, I separated my hair into four sections. Two top sections and two under sections.

I looked like I was trying to make a dodgy 90's hair-do.

  • Keeping bottom layer tied out the way I did one half of the top layer, then the other half.

I used no special technique here. I have no professional training. I just slapped the orange in my hair. To create some depth and tones I added bits of the yellow in places as "highlight" and red "shade".

I don't think it would have looked as good as it did if I just stuck to orange and blue.

  • Once the top layer is nicely smothered in orangey tones I tied the two halves back up and covered in cling film.
  • Then I moved on to the blue.
  • I used the same "technique" as before but with blue/purple/red tones. The blue/purple mix I made earlier.
  • I left this for a couple of hours wrapped the cling film, washed it out and conditioned.

Voila!
My autumnal palette.
Ready for Halloween.

I allowed this to just fade as it did over November. I got some wacky looks from this and then bleached it out in the 3rd week of November.

I needed the icy blonde look back for December

For this I used:
  • Hair bleach
  • Colour freedom toner
  • Manic Panic shocking blue
  • Colour freedom pastel

Simple for this one. Just think Elsa!

  • An icy white blonde top with blue undertone.
  • To give it more depth I did a dark deep blue undertone with a more pastel blue middle then blonde top.
  • This stopped harsh lines of colour and allowed the blue to fade into an icy shadow.

Thanks, FreyJa!

Graduate Show

Graduate Show Blog.

It is typical that the first time I have actual time to sit down and write this blog, that isn’t 2 am my laptop charger breaks, I lose my bank card and smash my phone screen.

woo, go technology!!

I’m hoping things just come in three’s and this is as bad as it gets for now and that karma kicks in soon and I get three great things happen… fingers are crossed for a new job with a future comes along!!

So, with the takedown of my graduate exhibition having happened a week ago now, I actually sit down and write this (new laptop charger with a slow laptop grr). Anyway, I thought I should write something on my grad show.

If you didn’t know I studied fine art painting at the at the university of Brighton and at the end of any art or design based course you put on an end of year show. In my case this was around 60% of the final degree...no pressure. So I guess this post is about how that all went down in the end.

You start the year with the prospect of third year wondering who’s going to crack first praying it’s not you so you don’t look the complete crazy one.

As a group you talk about the degree show but know you have to get through semester 1 first. You have a dissertation 18% and a studio assessment 22% so you just do a bit of fundraising – bake sales galore.

Christmas and New year’s come, you don’t enjoy yourself the way you should because your dissertation is in the week you come back.

You hand your dissertation in and take a sigh of relief, celebrate with drinks and food thinking the worst must be over. Right? I mean we’re painters, writing is the tricky bit and that’s done with now, so it must get easier. Right?

NO!

It starts out a bit calmer because you can dedicate so much more time to painting, the bit you like. This wears off after about a week when you realise your practice isn’t anywhere near developed to the point it should be.

So you spend your time looking at others, wondering why they look so much calmer than you, in reality, they think the same of you.

You have your tutors over the next few months try to help but are really twats who don’t understand you and your artwork – resorting into some angsty painter attitude, which is not helpful.

In amongst this you juggle your 20hour a week job, maybe a social life, sleep, eating and prepping the degree show. Small arguments arise over catalogue colour, whose turn is it to sit on the cake stall if you’re on the social media enough. We all know we’re only arguing because we are stressed from lack of sleep.

You manage.

Your tutors call you stupid. Don’t encourage your ideas or thoughts, argue like divorcing parents to the point you literally have no idea who you are anymore. – maybe bar work is for me, not art, bar work!!

Then Easter crops up.

Three blissful weeks with no tutors and fewer people in the studios. For me at least, this is when my painting really came to life and made sense.

I had no tutors telling me what was right or wrong and no tutors arguing like parents.
There was no unnecessary music in the studios, no random loud talking and laughing.
My tutors had nothing nasty to say anymore because with only 2 weeks left what good would it do!

Yeah! Fuck You!

Then we had to begin the end!!

Moving our work and equipment out the studios, taking down the studios and turning them into respectable white-walled exhibition space.

This was three weeks of stress in themselves...trying to coordinate walls being taken down and moved, scary business when your 5”1 like me.

It happened. Smoothly and quickly!

 Go class of 2016!

I think we all pretty much worked as a team all the way through, I was so impressed, so were our tutors by the sounds of things.

We had two weeks of waiting while the tutors then went round and judged us, deciding our fate from three years of tears, tantrums, alcohol, growing, falling, growing, laughter, bad times and good times. All of that came down to this final moment, rounded off by a busy opening night, fuelled with more alcohol and laughter and nerves.

I talk as if that is the end. This is the thing with uni, is that it has multiple endings. The next one was the taking down of the exhibition which for advice to anyone, don’t go in after a night out where you stopped drinking only a couple hours before because people will remember you as a mess.

Life was meant to get easier!!

And that not even the end, I get my results next week and then graduation ceremony in a month so still got two more endings to go!
The only good thing about this is that I can blag being a student for just a little bit longer.

 Fuck you council tax!!

This last semester at uni I have thought of it nothing but stress and completely pointless, why put yourself through and now being in the middle of the other side, I think it was fun, it was great (potentially will change when I get my grade) but I am happier I did it now, I understand more what I want my art to be and how I want to be. The change in me as a person is significant and I feel a better person than when I started but here’s the funny thing about life, moving to Brighton and doing my degree was meant to be the start of my life, now left uni applying for jobs, this is the new start to my life and I’m now realising that there is probably going to be multiple starts to my life, new stages or chapters – like the multiple endings of uni.

I look forward to this because as Chris Stevens (head of my course) repeated to us this year “Your grade doesn’t matter, you can leave uni and go out into the world far more emotionally developed people than others because you studied art and that’s more important than a 1st. And when life gets hard and stressful, feed the seagulls. Just feed the seagulls” Stevens, Chris, 2016, Brighton. (still can’t reference)

Again, this does not end the uni blogging as I still have to get my results and graduate!!

(You can tell I ended up writing most of this at 3am)

Two weeks later...

Two weeks into my blog and I'm already behind. Apparently life gets busy after you graduate.
What have I been doing?

·        Had my exhibition private view, so many people turned up J

·        Saw my sisters end of year drama performance, playing Amy Winehouse. She was absolutely brilliant!!

Even this classic Amy Winehouse smile, Triphene got perfect!!

·        Started full-time hours at my bar job (the main reason I have no time for things)

·        Made it to One Year with my boyfriend <3

·        Worked Mutiny Festival in Portsmouth. A house festival with Cee lo Green headlining…

·        Went to SPAMDUNK aka Slam Dunk Festival, with my boyfriend and sister.

·        Dropped my Cat Paintings off for another exhibition…feeling like a real proper artist now.

·        Had a job interview for Carlsberg Craft Beer range… I know nothing about beer let alone craft beer…turns out it’s not all made from hops!! Who knew!!

·        Got invited to make art works on skateboard decks for another exhibition...eeek!

·        Decided I don’t think I want to work for Carlsberg L
·        Continued to work more…my pay check better be good!!

Original Rihanna joke thrown in there...

I still don’t have a manifesto for this blog as I'm still working it out, so I will end with a twerking pig

Que Sera Sera.

Being a 21-year-old art student is hard.

Being a 21-year-old graduate is harder.

So I started a blog.

I finally finished studying a fine art degree with the dream of becoming an artist. I know this will take a lifetime so here’s to the next 5 years.

5 year plan

·        Sell a piece of art

·        Travel to, but not limited to: China, Japan, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, New York

·        Do my post-grad

·        Have Dorian (my cat) live with me

·        Get another tattoo

·        Watch my sister graduate (no pressure)

·        Watch my brother move out of home (chop chop!)

·        Have a solo exhibition

·        Buy a car

That’s all I can think of for now.

I would write a manifesto for this blog…but I don’t know what it will become.

Que Sera Sera.

Meaning: Used to convey a fatalistic recognition that future events are out of the speaker’s control.
